Tough Guy or Stupid Guy?

It’s been a long winter when it comes to training for the fast approaching Triathlon season. With a few months to go until the racing begins, I thought it would be nice to try something different…a personal challenge on a different level – Tough Guy Race.

I’m sure that for the majority Tough Guy would sound like torture but following my ex army days it appealed to me, I always like a new challenge! It claims to be the world’s most demanding one day survival ordeal.

Taking place at the end of January, the race consists of a cross country run followed by an assault course. The unique blend of mud, freezing lakes, acrophobia, claustrophobia, barbed wire, fire and electric shocks, over an 8 mile stretch must be the ultimate test for the human body!

Last years race started out with 6000 people, 2800 made it to the finish line, 100 of which were hypothermia patients. On top of that there were numerous broken bones.

Wish me luck, I just might need it…!

Round Norfolk Relay

I run with a social club for my running only events. Earlier this month we all took part in the Round Norfolk Relay. The race covered 193 miles of the Norfolk countryside, split into 17 stages. I would highly recommend relay race events to any running club. I felt it bought our team closer together after achieving a goal by working together. I ran what was supposed to be a 19.6 mile section of the race, but it turned out to be 21 miles after we were chased down by marshals telling us we had taken a wrong turn…well it was at dark by the time it was my turn to run!

Take a look at a this short film made by the Round Norfolk Relay organisers.

A great day and I reallly recommend it for those trying this sport for the first time. The weather was fantastic and the venue was perfect. There were lots of stars there including Spencer Smith world and Olympic Champion with the Planet X Team and Will Clarke one of the best swimmers around the world.

I was chuffed with an overall time of 50 minutes for a 500 m swim 15k bike and 5k run.

All in all it was a great last race of the season where everyone was chilled out and enjoying the massive scale and atmosphere of the place. It is the first time I have seen a triathlon with so much support and attendance from both racers and spectators...its exciting times for the sport in the UK and I have a feeling the competitions are only going to get bigger and bigger as the sport grows in popularity.

So the end of Michael Wenn's first season has arrived, read on for his story...

In total I competed in 11 triathlons with 8 Personal Bests. My last race was an Aquathlon on the 12th of August, which I have never done before and won!

I have one last Triathlon race this year before starting my Autumn Winter Training schedule and that is the National Nottingham Relay. This is where a team of four have a combined time to do. I am doing this with a mixed level of talent so more for fun and socialising than for competition.

If you are interested in getting into Triathlon then below are some tips and tricks I think are a must to helping you get faster and better straight away.

Where it All Started

Hello again, I figured you may like to know a little about how I got into Triathlon.

Early this year I decided to get back into getting fit properly in my spare time. Like many of you out there, I got to the point where I could feel myself getting slower and fatter and I wasn't going to sit back and become a couch potato. So this is where the story began.

I joined a local running club called the BRJ Road Runners http://www.brjroadrunners.org.uk/ and joined a running league for fun http://www.frostbiteleague.org.uk/ with four of my friends. The first race was a disappointing eye opener for me.  I sprinted off in 1st place but my eagerness and lack of stamina got the better of me and I trudged over the line in 60th place.  Needless to say my expectations were different to the reality.  Back in the day (armed forces), I could run a mile (1.6km) in 6 minutes, with boots on and a bergan. But now I am no longer working for Her Majesty The Queen and I had to accept that a desk job does not help fitness levels.

I have met a guy called Tony Daniels, he has coached his son to a level to be now competing for the UK national team in a junior league. He has been an amazing resource for me. I have learnt how to Road Bike properly for the first time and Swim. He has also made me join a local Triathlon club called PACTRAC http://www.pactrac.co.uk/ which should have a positive impact.

I will have my first triathlon soon, so wish me luck.  It is a middle distance between sprint and Olympic so will be a good benchmark for my progress.  In my next blog episode I will let you know my result and do my best to tell you everything I learn from it.  I hope someone reading this can learn from my mistakes and will take me on, either at a triathlon event, or even at Lotusphere or a user group.

From Zero to Ironman and Everything Inbetween

Hi my name is Michael Wenn I’m 25 and married to my wonderful wife Jo and have a beautiful boy called Aston. This blog is about my journey into Triathlons and eventually IRONMAN. I hope you enjoy the read about my story and please feel free to laugh at my expense, and comment, along the way.

For those of you not sure what a Triathlon consists of, here goes my shot at explaining it. The event is a mixture of three sports.

Notoriously swimming
Notoriously swimming...

Followed by biking
followed by biking...

Lastly running
lastly running.

You switch from one to another in what is called a transition and you try your best to do all three as fast as you can. There are many variations of Triathlon around the world, both in distance covered and how, or where, you do the different stages. There are three distances I am interested in:

  • Sprint = 400 meters swimming 20 km Biking 5 km running
  • Olympic = 800 meters swimming 40 km Biking 10 km running
  • Ironman = 3.8 km swimming 180 km Biking 42.2km running

I want to do the Ironman but I have never done any sort of triathlon before! I know you probably think I am insane…….and if you don’t, then probably you are insane yourself and I expect to see you at the start line. I want to turn my dream to reality so welcome to my very painful and long journey. I hope you will be able to enjoy my discomfort and blisters as much as I will. I’ll post next time about how I started on the training road. Please give me any tips, as I will need all the help I can get!
